April 7, 2022 – Lemonade, a Corporate-Incubated Company (CIC) of Day1 Company, has launched a new English conversation learning service, WannaSpeak.
Lemonade, responsible for the foreign language education business within Day1 Company, already offers services such as Light Workbook, Newspresso, and FastOne (1-on-1 English), with over 380,000 members to date.
Unlike its existing comprehensive learning programs, which cover reading, writing, listening, and speaking, WannaSpeak focuses solely on conversation skills. The service’s name, derived from “Wanna Speak?”, reflects its goal of helping learners become fluent in English conversation.
Traditional conversation resources like dramas or animations often feature outdated or exaggerated language, making them less practical for real-life conversations. To address this, Lemonade selected a popular U.S.-based YouTube channel to offer genuine, unscripted English. The program introduces the ‘Total Shadowing’ learning method, enabling learners to master not only pronunciation and intonation but also grammar, expressions, and cultural context.
A key feature of WannaSpeak is its educational content based on episodes from the famous YouTube channel Jubilee, which has over 7.12 million subscribers. Jubilee covers real-life topics such as money, alcohol, slang, and dating through discussion-based content, allowing learners to absorb natural English expressions and gain insights into cultural values through the conversations of native speakers.
The program’s effectiveness is enhanced by the Total Shadowing method developed by the WannaSpeak team. This method consists of four stages: Culture Shadowing, Expression Shadowing, Pattern Shadowing, and Intonation Shadowing. In the Culture Shadowing phase, learners are introduced to cultural knowledge and key terms from the episodes. Expression Shadowing teaches learners how to express phrases that are commonly used in Korean, like “sudden outburst” or “emotional rollercoaster,” but are difficult to translate into English.
The Pattern Shadowing stage focuses on essential conversational patterns, while Intonation Shadowing helps learners master word stress and intonation that can change the meaning of a sentence. Finally, in the Speaking Training course, learners practice 1,000 questions and answers to simulate video chats with a foreign friend, reinforcing the expressions they’ve learned.
In addition to Total Shadowing and Speaking Training, WannaSpeak features YouTuber Dave, who teaches 60 real-life expressions in his course What the DAVE, along with lessons on modern slang. Once purchased, learners gain lifetime access to the content, which is available for both English and Spanish learners.
Tina Tsu, CEO of Lemonade CIC, shared, “WannaSpeak offers a fun and immersive way to learn real English through lively YouTube content, as if you were practicing with a foreign friend. As a leading foreign language education company with a diverse portfolio of adult-targeted learning materials, 1:1 education, and speaking programs, we will continue developing new services that cater to the varying needs of language learners.”
