– Operates a 12-week premium study group, ‘Club Newspresso,’ with expert native English instructors for speaking practice
February 7, 2022 – Lemonade, a Corporate-Incubated Company (CIC) of Day1 Company, has launched a new premium English workbook, Newspresso, the company announced today.
Lemonade CIC, responsible for Day1 Company’s foreign language education, also operates Light Workbook, an adult-targeted foreign language learning service. With its popular, low-pressure approach of “one book per week, 10 minutes a day,” Light Workbook has attracted 350,000 subscribers.
Newspresso is a premium English workbook that uses articles from world-renowned media outlets, helping learners not only improve their English but also gain insights into global current events, business, and economics. Lemonade CIC is the first and only partner in Korea to have formal agreements with major international media outlets, including The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), TIME, Harvard Business Review (HBR), and The Economist.
The name Newspresso is a blend of “news” and “espresso,” reflecting the idea of effortlessly absorbing global news and in-depth English content, much like drinking a daily cup of coffee. While Light Workbook offers foundational language learning across multiple languages, Newspresso focuses on systematically advancing learners’ high-level English skills.
Within just two months of its launch, Newspresso gained over 10,000 members and achieved 200% of its projected sales. Customers have responded positively to the high-quality business English learning experience, with 78.3% reporting significant improvement in their English proficiency.
Newspresso uses an all-in-one blended learning method that helps learners develop their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. It selects trending topics based on big data and expert insights, choosing articles suited for language education. The workbook offers comprehensive explanations of vocabulary, phrases, and expressions, along with background knowledge related to the articles. Additionally, it includes a section dedicated to improving writing skills through logical expression.
The program also features lifetime access to video lectures by language experts with a combined 40 years of experience, audio shadowing (reading along) sessions to improve speaking skills, and speaking workbooks. Moreover, learners receive a one-year subscription to The Wall Street Journal, valued at KRW 300,000, to stay up-to-date with the latest global news.
Club Newspresso, a premium online study group, is also available to boost learners’ productivity. Participants engage in weekly learning missions over a 12-week period, led by a study group leader. Those who complete all missions receive a full refund of the study fee. Participants also gain access to a free one-time essay correction service from a native instructor and an online live class.
Tina Tsu, CEO of Lemonade CIC, commented, “Most adult English education in Korea focuses on casual conversation or exam preparation, making it difficult for learners to naturally acquire English as a language. Newspresso was designed to address this by covering a wide range of topics and expressions through news-based premium learning content. We have partnered with some of the world’s most prestigious media outlets to provide high-quality learning materials, and we will continue to make bold moves to introduce innovative language learning methods.”
